Deep in the remote Cataloochee Cove section of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park sits this restored and furnished one room school house, known as the Beech Grove School.

This school house was in use until the National Park Service bought it in the 1930's — and Miss Burrell was its last full-time teacher.

"Miss Elsie", as her students called her, received the 1993 Award of Great Leadership in Human Rights from the National Education Association; the National Park Service has named Tremont's Elsie Burrell Activity Center in her honor.
