    G. L. Nolan displays her Christmas miniatures every year in the Smoky Mountain village of Whittier, NC. To take this portrait of her, I let the Christmas lights burn into the film for over a minute, then bounced a soft flash off her face from a distance of 20 feet.

    I took this picture of Asheville artist Carol Bomer for the distinguished regional magazine Our State. She is bathed with late afternoon light flooding in from her studio windows.

    In a North Carolina tobacco auction, bidders move slowly down the rows of tobacco bidding as they go; by the time the group passes a pallet, it's sold. This photo, taken for Compass American Guides, shows this stately progress.
