Next: Great Britain, the Mountains of the Virginias, and Florida
Here are some sample shots from Jim's core area, the Smoky Mountains and North Carolina, with some background comments from Jim.
North Carolina Mountains![]() NC: Haywood County, Waynesville Area, Waynesville, View of small town surrounded by the forested slopes of the Pisgah Range, in the Pisgah National Forest [ref. to #227.231] This is my largest specialty area, the subject of my first photo/text guide book, and my home for the last decade. My 7,000 images of this region may well include just the picture you need -- and if they don't, I know all the locations. For instance, this photograph can only be had from a certain supermarket parking lot! |
![]() NC: Yancey County, Mayland Valley, Bald Creek Area, Lickskillit Community, Red roofed barn in meadows; late fall [ref. to #228.809] Light mists on the mountainsides have given these ranges their name, The Smokies. This barn sits up a dead-end gravel road, in a perched valley known as "Lickskillit". |
![]() NC: Macon County, Nantahala National Forest, The Southern Nantahala Mountains, Standing Indian Recreation Area, Fall colors along Moody Creek, in fog [ref. to #228.397] I have a good selection of fog images. Mountain streams, wilderness forests, fall colors, and soft fog tell the story of the Southern Nantahala Wilderness, a huge tract of public land less than 30 miles south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. |
![]() NC: Swain County, Tuckaseegee Valley, South of Bryson City, Alarka Cove, Flowers on graves in Alarka Cemetary. Mountains, fall colors, in bkgd [ref. to #203.048] Tiny hilltop cemeteries are an enduring part of every mountain community, invariably well-kept and colorful with silk flowers. |
Downstate North Carolina![]() NC: Guilford County, Tri-Cities Region, Greensboro, Blandwood Mansion, gas lamp in front of 19th C. Italianate mansion. [ref. to #230.244] I have 4,000 images of the North Carolina piedmont, coast, and Outer Banks, including all major cities and towns, tobacco country, farming views, natural sites, lighthouses, and beaches. This historic Italianate home, with its gas light burning in broad daylight, is a museum in the peidmont insurance city of Greensboro, NC. |
![]() NC: Durham County, Tri-Cities Area, Durham, Downtown, Tobacco factory; Lucky Strike logo on water tower & brick chimney [ref. to #233.703] The Lucky Strike water tower and chimney remain a landmark in downtown Durham, even as its tobacco factories migrate elsewhere. |
