Professional Writing by Jim & Kasey Hargan

Text About Places

Jim Hargan specializes in text about places — precise, straightforward stories that paint a clear picture in your readers' minds. With thirty years experience as a professional geographer, Jim goes well beyond the routine approaches of the travel trade. He uses deep, careful research, both in the field and in the library, to build a richly detailed portrait of your place.

Travel? Of course. Jim has wide experience as a travel writer, both on assignment as a journalist and in authoring complete books. However, Jim is a geographic writer. When you need copy about a place, his deep knowledge will bring you beyond the ordinary, and let you connect with your customers in ways that speak straight to their expectations and their needs.

Major Publications

  • Jim's travel articles have appeared in magazines ranging from Country Extra to Japan's Exploring the Heart of Britain, with the majority being published by British Heritage. This bi-monthly magazine has commissioned nearly eighty of his photo/text packages since 1998. The bulk of these are long-form essays copiously illustrated with Jim's photos. They've asked Jim to write on a wide variety of topics, with the typical article exploring a specific travel destination through its links with history and literature.
  • Travel Books: Countryman Press, the distinguished travel imprint of publisher WW Norton, has commissioned Jim to write and photograph three titles of their popular Explorer's Guide series, as well as two titles of their Photographer's Guide series. Countryman Press appreciates Jim's ability to weave themes through an entry-based guidebook, to perform focused research that allows the books to rise above the competition, and to involve their readers with a good sense of the places they are going to visit.
