The Mast General Store continues as the center of social life in tiny Valle Crucis, over a hundred years from its founding.

Formed around a mile-high sky slope, the Village of Beech Mountain is the highest incorportated town in the East.

The ski slopes of Beech Mountain and the nearby town of Banner Elk host a large community of wealthy second homes, such as this one in a gated community.
